Qualifications: BA (Music); BMus (hons); PGDip (piano accompaniment); MMus
Please feel free to make inquiries about trial lessons. At times I have limited space available, so please be aware that you may need to be placed on a waiting list.
During my studies at the Royal College of Music, I took part in Nigel Clayton's 'The Art of Teaching' classes, and have been teaching both privately and within schools since 2002, including 5 years at an independent preparatory school in London, and an additional 5 years at Blundell's School. I have been teaching at various independent schools in Devon since relocating from London in 2015, and have a busy private practice.
I have extensive experience in preparing students successfully for:
- ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall exams
- performing elements of GCSE and A level examinations
- recitals and auditions
I have taught all ages and levels, from absolute beginners to advanced (post-grade 8 and diploma). However, developing both a love of music and a sense of musicianship are what is most important to me, and so I have many students who do not necessarily sit exams. Learning any instrument (or indeed, any skill) requires a combination of dedication, discipline and perseverance alongside the creative enjoyment that making music brings, but it is well worth the effort and time. I can give guidance on regularity and duration of practice sessions according to age and level, as well as how to organise practice sessions for more effective progress In addition to the practical side of playing the piano, I am also able to teach music theory, aural and general musicianship (skills which all come together together to make a rounded musician).
I strongly believes that music is for everyone, and endeavour to pass on passion, enthusiasm and curiosity for music on to my students, as well as looking at issues such as performance anxiety, motivation and confidence.
Please note that lessons are paid for in advance and fees are charged in line with current Musicians' Union rates: https://musiciansunion.org.uk/music-teaching/teaching-pay-and-employment/teaching-rates-of-pay. Please see the subheadings for a copy of the Lesson Agreement and a guide to music lessons.
I have an enhanced DBS disclosure and am registered to their update service. I am also a member of the Musicians' Union.
